I posted my favorite 20 Shows to Binge Watch in 2021, which is a mix of old and new, but the first part of 2021 has given us so many great shows that I have to do another list. These are my top new picks along with some older goodies that you may not have seen. I've included a little bit for everyone with options from Netflix, YouTube, Amazon and Disney+.
1 The One (Netflix)
This new release quickly jumped to Netflix's Top Ten. It's a modern sci-fi/drama where you can find your perfect love match with a simple test. Think 23andMe meets Match.com. It really makes you wonder would you want to know if your perfect match was out there somewhere?
2 Ginny & Georgia (Netflix)
I binged Ginny & Georgia the weekend after it came out, and it was totally not what I expected....in the BEST way! According to Forbes magazine, it's the fifth most popular Netflix series since their Top Ten feature debuted, falling short only to Tiger King, The Queen's Gambit, The Umbrella Academy, and Ratched. This review by Vulture perfectly sums up how I felt when watching Ginny and Georgia navigate life and love. It's the Trash Can Nachos of Netflix dramas!
3 The Last Blockbuster (Netflix)
This self-explanatory titled documentary about the last remaining Blockbuster Video in Bend, Oregon will bring back memories of the good old days. There was literally no better feeling that hitting Blockbuster on Friday night before all the new releases were gone, and we've all asked the clerk to check the return box one more time.
Fun Fact: Keep your eye out for the next available booking to spend the weekend at The Last Blockbuster.
Never forget: Be Kind, Please Rewind.
4 Kara and Nate (YouTube)
This YouTube channel takes us along on the traveling adventures of newlyweds, Kara and Nate, from Nashville. Their honesty and relatability make for easy viewing. You can live vicariously through them as they travel the world. My favorite episode was their 24-hour stay at the world's largest Buc-ee's gas station in Texas. Who doesn't love Buc-ee's?
5 Sailing La Vagabonde (YouTube)
Australian vloggers, Riley and Elayna, let us into their life sailing around the world on this YouTube channel. I'm talking about living fulltime on a catamaran. I should also mention that they could seriously be models! If you've ever had the dream of living on the open seas, this is the channel for you. Even if you're not a water person (like me), their lifestyle is still extremely interesting and they are so neat to watch!
6 Company Man (YouTube)
Company Man is my husband and daughter's all-time favorite YouTube channel to watch together. This guy (Mike a/k/a Company Man) profiles some of the biggest companies, brands, and products in the world in a very easy to understand and visually appealing format. These short videos are just enough to give you all the information you need without boring you to death. We particularly like the rise and fall and rise again stories he puts out. If you want your kids to learn the basics of what to do (and not to do) in business, let them watch these videos!
If you watch only one, make it Arby's - The Rise and Fall...And Rise Again.
7 It All Begins With A Song (Amazon)
This documentary profiles some of the greatest songwriters in Nashville. It brings us along the writing process and really gives you an intimate look into the Nashville songwriting community. To me, it was very reminiscent of VH1's Behind the Music, but with individual songs being explained by the writers. The legendary songs showcased are “The Dance,” “Whiskey Lullaby,” “Don’t Stop Believing, ” and “I Drive Your Truck.” If you love music, this is a must watch.
8 Take Us Home - Leeds United (Amazon)
If you are a soccer enthusiast, or even a sports fan in general, this documentary gives a behind the scenes look into the business side of how to run a top European futbol club. You get to see the excitement and loyalty from a fan's perspective. Think NFL elevated to a larger than life level. These fans are as diehard as they come! It's got all the drama, money, injuries, and pure adrenaline you could ever want in sports!
9 Wandavision (Disney+)
Wandavision is hands-down my favorite new show of 2021! Disney+ describes it as a blend of the style of classic sitcoms with the Marvel Comics in which Wanda Maximoff and Vision, two super-powered beings living their ideal suburban lives, begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems. Elizabeth Olson is stunning and captivating as Wanda, and Kathryn Hahn steals the show as Agnes. Even if you're not a big Marvel fan, do not sleep on Wandavision. The only bad thing about it is there's not more!
10 Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions (Disney+)
This intimate concert-style documentary takes us through the making of Taylor Swift's record-breaking album, folklore. She wrote, recorded and released the album during the Covid-19 pandemic, and it went on to win a Grammy for Album of the Year. What a year to be a Taylor fan!
