Books are a cheap and productive use of your time.

Used sites like Thriftbooks have a great selection and offer free shipping. Trading with friends and browsing public libraries are also great frugal options! There is no better time than when you’re trying to be frugal to work on bettering yourself, either through learning more about personal finance or personal development.

Here are 6 suggestions to keep your motivation high when debt payoff burnout creeps in!

1. Rich Habits - The Daily Success Habits of Wealthy Individuals by Thomas Corley

If you pick one book off of this list, READ THIS ONE. With only 90 pages, this quick read is packed with useful information. Big things come in small packages! Don’t let the title fool you either. It’s more self-improvement than personal finance. The format of 10 individual stories makes it super easy to read and inspires personal growth by simply replacing small bad habits with beneficial alternatives that produce long-lasting results.

2. The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod

Not really a morning person? Yeah, me neither. Read this one before bed, and you might find yourself waking up earlier everyday. Coincidentally, the author penned this book and created the routines within it after suffering deep depression caused by…wait for it…. DEBT! Full of small habit changes and challenges, it will push you out of your comfort zone and motivate you to be the best version of yourself. We’re talking next level, here! Set your coffee pot the night before, grab some breakfast, and seize the day!

3. HBR Guide to Getting the Right Work Done by Harvard Business Review

I actually stumbled upon this book at my local Books-A-Million where it had been misplaced in the wrong section. I was looking for my usual celebrity magazine and picked this up because it said Harvard on it. I felt 10x smarter just holding it and totally pretended it was an intentional pick at the register. To my surprise, it wasn’t over my head! If you don’t like a lot of fluff and just want helpful, direct tips, this how-to guide specifically geared toward improving personal productivity, organization, and time management is your kinda book. Plus, you’ll look real smart reading it at Starbucks!

4. The Sell: The Secrets of Selling Anything to Anyone by Fredrik Eklund

Okay, I know what you’re thinking, “How does she follow up a Harvard Business book with this recommendation?” Well, if you’ve seen any of my previous posts, you know I love my Bravo celebs! For those of you who don’t know, Fredrik is the loud, outspoken, super successful realtor from Million Dollar Listing New York.

My husband, who spent years working in sales, loves to watch with me. Fredrik didn’t become a top-selling realtor in The Big Apple without the ability to connect with people. Just like you can’t look away from his excitement and over-the-top personality on the show, you won’t be able to put his book down! This pick is all about getting you in a motivated and focused mindset.

5. Get A Financial Life by Beth Kobliner

This personal finance book should be mandatory reading for high school seniors along with a full book report before receiving their diploma. It covers every important topic imaginable and provides relatable examples to prepare you for managing your finances. Whether you struggle with money, are brand new to financial concepts, or even if you already feel fairly confident, this pick is a must for everyone. I really wish I had read it sooner!

Side Note: I found an elementary level workbook to introduce my fifth grader to the world of economics and finances with real world, hands-on activities, like how to write a check, budget, read and fill out a tax return, and so much more! I would fully recommend this resource for kids.

6. You Are A Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero

It’s all right there in the title! Just like a strong cup of coffee in the morning, sometimes you need a slap in the face to wake you up to your full potential. This is a feel good self-help full of short motivating stories and techniques to bring out your best traits. Easy to read and hilarious, it creates motivation while simultaneously forcing you to face hard questions you may have been unknowingly avoiding. We can all use a motivating pep talk when the grind of paying off debt starts to weigh us down. You will feel like you can take on the world after this read.
