Are you looking for your next show? Well, you're in the right place, because my super power is binge watching! I've made you my list of top shows as we tune in to 2021.
1 Schitt's Creek (Netflix) - Comedy
There's a reason why this hilarious show swept the Emmy's in EVERY. SINGLE. COMEDY. CATEGORY. You will laugh and cry with the Rose family, but you will not learn how to fold the cheese! This is a must watch.
2 The Handmaid's Tale (Hulu) - Drama
You won't be able to take your eyes off of Elizabeth Moss (Offred) in this story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was the United States. Gilead is ruled by a fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state, and is faced with environmental disasters and a plummeting birth rate. In a desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world, the few remaining fertile women are forced into sexual servitude. One of these women, Offred, is determined to survive the terrifying world she lives in and find the daughter that was taken from her. Another must watch!
3 The Queen's Gambit (Netflix) - Drama
Based off the 1983 American novel by Walter Tevis, this show follows a fictional female chess prodigy. I don't even like chess, but this show makes me want to break out a board and yell CHECKMATE!
4 Yellowstone (Peacock) - Drama
This modern-day western follows the Dutton family, who own and run a huge ranch. It has all the drama, cliffhangers, and cowboys you could ever want in a good western! Did I mention the cowboys? That may be my favorite part. I'm just sayin' that Rip Wheeler is a whole snack! Thirty minutes into the pilot episode, and I was hooked.
5 The Circle (Netflix) - Reality
I know what you're thinking, but seriously give it a chance! The players start off isolated in an apartment, and with their online interactions as their only means of communication. They use a social media platform called "The Circle" to interact with each other. Think Big Brother meets Catfished meets Real World. I was OBSESSED and could not stop watching after the first episode. "Circle, Send Message!"
6 Love (Netflix) - Comedy
Gillian Jacobs (Mickey) and Paul Rust (Gus) are funny and endearing in this comedy about two people trying to navigate the exhilarations and humiliations of intimacy, commitment and other things they were both hoping to avoid. This show is very underrated, but is a must see, especially if you like Judd Apatow (one of the creators and writers).
7 Selling Sunset (Netflix) - Reality
Do not sleep on Selling Sunset, y'all! It is jam-packed with drama, drama, and a little bit of luxury real estate. They are just as petty as they are pretty, and they'll have you googling "in escrow" real quick. Think Laguna Beach, but in The Real Housewives time era! Yeah, it's good. I can't wait to see which leading lady is your favorite!
8 Saved by the Bell (Peacock) - Sitcom
Okay, I'm not usually a fan of reboots, but this one is actually good. There's just enough nostalgia from the 90's original, but they did a great job of making it current and relevant. It's definitely smarter than your average teenage sitcom with diversity and fresh ideas. Plus, Zack and Kelly are still together and had a mini-Morris, and Slater calls Jessie "Doctor Mama" these days. Ahhhh, good times!
9 This Is Us (Hulu and Peacock) - Drama
What is not to love about The Pearson family? It is deep and real and will have you all up in your feels. I am so invested in every character's story! My heart has broken with Rebecca, celebrated with Kate, ached for Kevin, empathized with Randall, and then did it all over again through their many ups and downs. I even bought a new crock pot after the infamous episode. If you know, you know.
10 Bridgerton (Netflix) - Drama
Set in the Regency era in England, this (very-MA) drama lives up to all the hype! The Bridgertons have the season's most incomparable young lady, and then enters THE DUKE! Lady Whistledown keeps us up to date with all the tea, and every episodes leaves us wanting more. Pay close attention to the background music, and you may recognize some of those tunes - SO GOOD.
11 Queer Eye (Netflix) - Reality
They're back! More than a decade after the original series ended, Netflix rebooted the "Queer Eye" franchise with a new Fab Five! Helping people in need of lifestyle makeovers, are Antoni Porowski (food and wine specialist), Bobby Berk (interior designer), Jonathan Van Ness (grooming consultant), Tan France (fashion designer), and Karamo Brown (culture expert). Honey, I could watch JVN and the boys any day of the year! This is such a feel-good show. YAS, Honey!
12 Love Is Blind (Netflix) - Reality
A group of singles who want to be loved for who they are, rather than what they look like, join this social experiment to see if love really is blind. Can you even imagine getting engaged to someone you've never seen in person? Like, what? It was fascinating to watch the process and see it work (and not work.) Just know that Jessica is a whole trip!
13 The Act (Hulu) - Drama
It's crazy how good this show is, but even crazier that it's based on the true life story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard and her mother, Dee Dee. Joey King, who plays Gypsy, is absolutely riveting and brings the story to life. Patricia Arquette is equally as captivating as she plays out the disturbing, bizarre details of Dee Dee's twisted plans. Chills all over!!
14 Making a Murderer (Netflix) - Crime Documentary
While we're talking about chilling, Making a Murderer is just that! This show walks you through the story of Steven Avery, who served 18 years in prison for the wrongful conviction of sexual assault and murder. The details of this case and the footage will leave you with more questions than answers, but you'll most likely be wondering how in the world Steven Avery ended up in jail. Heads up - you won't be able to stop once you start, so be ready to binge it all at once! Like Mama Kris always says, "This is a case for the FBI."
15 The Baby-Sitters Club (Netflix) - Drama
I loved The Baby-Sitters Club books when I was younger, so you can imagine my excitement when Netflix announced this new take on the classic! The best part is that I got to share this one with my daughter, who is about the same age I was when I read the books. We binged the entire season the day it dropped, and we were not disappointed. This show is smart, diverse, inclusive and aware of the issues facing today's youth. They nailed it!
16 The Sinner (Netflix) - Drama
Jessica Biel is perfection is Season One of this thriller! She plays the role of a young mother who commits an unexpected act of violence in a fit of rage, and she has no idea why. The event jumpstarts a deep dive into unfolding why as the investigator becomes obsessed with her motive. The violent and shocking secrets of her past are haunting. You will be hooked until the very end. Each season is a different story, but Season One is my favorite!
17 The League (Hulu) - Comedy
This show follows a group of close friends in a fantasy football league. They love to give each other a hard time. It's raunchy and really funny. Think New Girl meets It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Very funny!
18 Big Little Lies (HBO) - Drama
The apparently perfect lives of upper-class mothers, at a prestigious elementary school, unravel to the point of murder when a single-mother moves to their quaint Californian beach town. You will be on the edge of your seat trying to keep up with the twists and turns of this all-star cast!
19 House of Cards (Netflix) - Drama
You'll never find a better power couple than congressman, Francis Underwood, and his wife, Claire. This show takes you into the cut-throat world of politics. It's exciting, realistic and at times unpredictable. Robin Wright is stunning as Claire!
20 The Keepers (Netflix) - Crime Documentary
This chilling documentary is hard to watch, but it will leave you truly wanting to know what happened to Sister Cathy! This seven part documentary delves into the unsolved mystery of Sister Cathy and the horrific secrets and pain that linger nearly five decades after her death.
And there you have it - my list of the 20 shows you should binge watch in 2021!
